North West Cambridge Development │ University Housebuilder

The creation of the first phase of the Eddington community is the culmination of a £350 million investment by the University of Cambridge, and part of the £1bn development to alleviate the University’s chronic housing storage. The provision of 3,000 new homes built to Code of Sustainable Homes Level 5, half for sale to the private sector, and half affordable housing for university staff.

The North West Cambridge Development masterplan, developed by AECOM, revolves around a central space known as Market Square, in the heart of the new University of Cambridge (UoC) developed district, Eddington. The new district officially opened to the public on 9th September 2017, including a new primary school and Sainsbury’s supermarket. The site-wide infrastructure was delivered by contractor Skanska.

The UoC required the highest level of survey accuracy to ensure the as-built construction is in accordance with the masterplan design, and appointed Aworth to independently audit and verify primary setting-out control.

Uckfield Lions Classic Car Run 2017

Uckfield & District Lions Club held their 14th annual Classic Car Run recently, with the route taking them along coastal roads and back through the Sussex countryside. The event attracted 114 entries and raised funds in excess of £2,600 for the Sussex based charity, Canine Partners, who provide trained dogs to assist people with complex disabilities and injured personnel from the armed forces.

A surprise visit by a hand built Rolls Royce vehicle powered by a Spitfire Merlin engine proved a tremendous attraction, accompanied with the deafening roar of the exhaust.

MAPS@Aworth tackle Uckfield Rugby Club’s call

When Uckfield Rugby Club put out a call on carnival day for help, MAPS@Aworth sprang into action.

The club needed banners for their carnival float, and with our large format printer, we produced and delivered them within a few hours ready for kick-off.

Congratulations to Uckfield Rugby Club for winning best in class prize for their float.

Gloria’s Retirement Lunch

After over 25 years as an employee of the company, Gloria Jones retired in August 2017. As our company accountant, Gloria provided Aworth Survey Consultants and our clients with an exceptional service.

Gloria will be missed by all of us, and we wish her all the best for a happy retirement.

The company held a special retirement lunch on the 5th September at Fox & Grapes, Wimbledon in honour. There was a special presentation to Gloria to show our appreciation, and for her loyal service that she provided over all the years with the company.


Rushden Lakes │ Retail

Aworth Survey Consultants have been undertaking topographical surveys at Rushden Lakes since 2014 to provide survey data for environmental, geotechnical, highways & transportation engineering.

Working with Campbell Reith – consulting engineers, Marian Cameron Consultants – environmental consultancy and Vectos – transport planning, Aworth have delivered high quality survey data to each phase of the project on this prestigious sustainability-led project.

Rushden Lakes is a unique retail and leisure development in Northampton, set in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The site is owned by The Crown Estate, which is funding the £140 million scheme.

When complete Rushden Lakes will have 43 shops and restaurants, and will create 1900 permanent jobs locally and will sit beside 200 acres of wetlands which is managed by the Wildlife Trust.


One Crown Place, London │Surveying from Design to Build

Aworth Survey Consultants are delighted to have been the measurement surveyors for the One Crown Place, London project since 2006.

The truly mixed-use project comprising of two residential towers (32 storeys), sitting upon a podium block of offices, amenity space, and retail units. The Victorian warehouse façade to the north, listed chapel to the west and Georgian terraces to the south are integrated into the master scheme.

We were commissioned by the project architects Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) to produce accurate Topographical & Measured Building Surveys, Verified Views and complied Land Registry plans for planning design and applications, and remain actively involved in the project, including precise setting-out grids for the building.

Aworth have provided continual Movement Monitoring Surveys on the project since 2009, and continue to monitor the listed façades and basement walls for project and development managers CBRE whilst the demolition and construction proceed.

Additionally, Aworth have produced BIM Revit models and HD Laser Scanning for Mace (the appointed consultants to deliver the pre-construction services) of the retained facades and provided the Drone Survey Control.


H&M │Bluewater Statement Store

Aworth are proud to be the measurement surveyors for delivering the new 40,000 sq ft H&M statement store at Bluewater, its flagship for the South East. 

Russell Loveland, Portfolio Director at Land Securities, co-owner and asset manager of Bluewater, said: “Upsizing H&M to create a new statement store has been an objective for some time, as we work to ensure our key brands trade from stores that reflect Bluewater’s position in the industry.”

Aworth Survey Consultants undertook precise As-Built floor plans and Area Calculations with GIA and NIA for handover to H&M, and continue to work closely with Land Securities to provide professional independent retail surveying services, compliant with RICS Property Measurement,1st edition.


Uckfield Lions Classic Car Rally 2016

Crawley Queens Square Redevelopment Starts │ CCTV Drainage Survey

Aworth Survey Consultants were commissioned by Waterman Infrastructure & Environment to undertake a full CCTV Drainage Survey for Crawley Council at Queens Square. The comprehensive survey included all public foul and surface water connections.

The £3.2m regeneration project is expected to be completed by next summer and will include new high quality paving, new and improved lighting, seating, street furniture, planting and a central focal point including a plaza and decorative water feature.

North West Cambridge Development │ Independent Verification Survey

Aworth Survey Consultants are pleased to have been appointed by the University of Cambridge (UoC) to independently audit and verify the primary setting-out control at North West Cambridge Development.

The major project will create 3,000 homes built to Code of Sustainable Homes Level 5, 150 hectares of mixed use development, 50 hectares of green space, the largest water-recycling system in the UK, and a district heating network to serve the development.

The UoC team required the highest level of survey accuracy to ensure the as-built construction is in accordance with the masterplan design.

Uckfield Lions Classic Car Rally 2015

Uckfield & District Lions Club held their twelfth annual Classic Car Rally, a 60 mile tour through the Sussex Weald countryside. The event attracted 114 entries and raised funds in excess of £2,650 for The Uckfield Citizens Advice Bureau and local Dementia Care Support.

Supporting Croudace on the ShelterBox - Wild West Challenge

Aworth Survey Consultants are pleased to have supported Lewis Brown, from Croudace Homes whose team successfully completed the ShelterBox Wild West challenge. Croudace who entered three teams raised over £7,800 for the charity ShelterBox.

ShelterBox provides emergency shelter and vital supplies to support communities around the world overwhelmed by disaster and humanitarian crisis. www.shelterbox.org

The Wild West challenge consisted of hiking, cycling and canoeing around the River Exe and Dartmoor National park, carrying a ShelterBox in this 67 miles two day multi challenge.

RISQS 5-STAR Maturity Rating

Aworth Survey Consultants recently underwent a renewal audit for the RISQS accreditation (formerly Link-Up). Aworth’s successful audit saw them retain a 5-star maturity rating of the company’s management systems, demonstrating compliance against both the industry wide assurance requirements and specific infrastructure requirements.

RISQS supports the main infrastructure contractors including Network Rail and Transport for London in the management of supply chain risk.

Successfully retaining RISQS accreditation ensures that Aworth can continue to strengthen their position as an approved service provider of railway surveys to the rail industry.

TSA Presents Top Award to Aworth Director

The Survey Association (TSA), the trade body for the UK’s commercial survey companies, has named John Witherden, director of Aworth Survey Consultants, the winner of TSA’s President’s Award 2015.

John Witherden was recently presented with the President’s Award for his outstanding contribution to the success of the TSA.  John was a member of the governing Council of the UK Survey Association for 16 years and his guidance and judgement will be missed.

The trophy was presented by Chris Lennon, Head of Lockton’s Bristol Office who sponsor the award and in addition to the trophy, Lockton are donating the sum of £100 to John’s chosen charity, Hospice in the Weald.

Uckfield & District Lions Club held their eleventh annual Classic Car Rally through the Sussex Weald countryside and picture postcard villages around Hever and Penshurst. The event attracted 118 entries and raised funds in excess of £2000 for local Sussex charities: St Peter & St James Hospice and The Horder Charitable Trust.

Aworth were pleased to assist Uckfield & District Lions Club again this year with supplying the official route maps to the drivers.

The next Uckfield Lions Classic Car Rally will be held on 27th September 2015.

London Gateway | Super-Port opens for Business

DP World’s London Gateway at Stanford-le-Hope, Essex officially opens. The £1.5bn deep water port and logistics park is situated at the former Shell Haven oil refinery.

London Gateway including the integrated road, rail and sea network has been designed and built based upon Aworth Survey Consultant’s topographical survey information.

The deep-water container port is equipped with a vast 2,700m quay and six berths, serviced by the world’s tallest quay cranes at 137m. The DP World port will be the UK’s second largest when fully operational and will be capable of accommodating the largest cargo ships in the world.

Leica Geosystems Honours Aworth

Leading surveying manufacturer Leica Geosystems has presented a piece of heritage equipment, to Aworth Survey Consultants, to mark the company’s 50 years in the business of surveying.

A surprise presentation of a specially engraved Wild/Leica Zenith & Nadir optical plummet, circa 1963, was made to Aworth’s managing director John Witherden during a group discussion meeting of The Survey Association (TSA) at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford.

Leica Geosystems’ UK direct sales manager Tim Badley, who made the presentation, said, “It is a great pleasure to be able to congratulate John personally on successfully leading Aworth to their 50th year and to wish them many more years of success. It seemed altogether appropriate to present Aworth Survey Consultants with a piece of Wild/Leica survey history to mark this milestone.”


MAPS@Aworth support Lions Club Rally

Uckfield & District Lions Club held their tenth Annual Classic Car Run starting from the eponymous Crosthwaite & Gardiner works at Buxted, East Sussex to see replica cars being built, before undertaking the 30 mile pictorial run through the Sussex countryside and finishing at the Halfway House Inn, near Uckfield. The event attracted 142 entries and raised considerable funds for local charities.

As part of Aworth Survey Consultants celebrations, marking 50 years of surveying, the newspapers have featured articles in their Business Supplements on the career of John Witherden from trainee surveyor to managing director, and the development of Aworth Survey Consultants from a start-up company in 1963 to now one of the UK’s leading companies in land surveys, measured building surveys and engineering surveys.

Lots Road: Construction powers up!

Construction work has started at the former power station, to become one of the largest residential developments on the north bank to create 706 homes, shops, restaurants, two public squares and three new bridges across Chelsea Creek. The £1bn Hutchinson Whampoa Properties scheme is designed by Sir Terry Farrell, with Formation Architects transforming the iconic LUL power station.

Aworth Survey Consultants undertook the measured building survey of Lots Road Power Station. Since 2007 Aworth have worked and assisted with all the site’s various proposals, providing topographical, measured building surveys and hydrographical survey on the project.

Reuben’s £214m Piccadilly Palace based on Aworth Survey

Aworth Survey Consultants undertook the measured building survey of Piccadilly Estate including the former In & Out club. Since 2001 Aworth have worked and assisted with all the site’s various proposals, providing topographical, underground services surveys and rectified photography on the project.

The Reuben Brothers scheme will see the grade I listed property become the UK’s most expensive residence at £214m. Designed by Architects Paul Davis + Partners, the proposals will transform this iconic property to a 48 room palatial residence and the remaining Piccadilly Estate into exclusive apartments.

Grand Designs | Lambeth Water Tower, Kennington, London

Aworth Survey Consultants undertook the measured building survey of the 135-year-old, Grade II listed Lambeth Water Tower to a demanding English Heritage specification. Aworth have worked closely with ACR Architects on this project since spring 2011, and Channel 4’s flagship design programme Grand Designs follows the story of the renovation and conversion of this bespoke property into a luxury home with a 360 degree viewing room at the top.

Lambeth Water Tower, Kennington will be televised on the 100th episode of Grand Designs on 17th October 2012 on Channel 4 at 9.00pm.

Grand Designs starts filming

Kevin McCloud and the Channel 4 Grand Designs team have starting filming at Lambeth Hospital Water Tower, London [February 2012].

The imposing and distinctive Venetian Gothic style Water Tower, built in 1877 to the design of Fowler and Hill is of special architectural interest and historical value.

Aworth have worked closely with ACR Architects on this demanding English Heritage specification project since spring 2011, and will follow the renovation of the Water Tower and conversion of this bespoke property with a great deal of interest.


Mayor of London opens Exhibition Road

After years of meticulous planning and construction work along Exhibition Road, South Kensington, the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson officially opened the new-look road on 1st February 2012, which features a kerb-free single surface with no barriers or street clutter.

Aworth Survey Consultants were appointed by architects Dixon Jones to undertake topographical and measured surveys of Exhibition Road, the Underground Pedestrian Tunnel and detailed drawings of the Victorian Lanterns. The £29m scheme has changed this once unwelcoming road into a world class streetscape, the largest project of the Mayor’s ‘London’s Great Outdoors’ programme.

Award winning garden designers Modular Garden, co-foundered by Joe Swift a regular BBC Gardening Presenter, use Aworth Survey Consultants to provide them with detailed surveys to base their innovative designs upon. Thameslink Programme - Update

The new landmark bridge at Borough Viaduct, due to be completed in late 2012 and part of the £6 Billion project Thameslink Programme is based upon Aworth survey data. In 2002 when the initial proposals began under the Thameslink 2000 branding, Aworth Survey Consultants were commissioned by Skanska to provide accurate topographical and measured building surveys for the project.

Aworth delivered comprehensive topographical and underground services surveys for the entire project, and in addition provided detailed measured building surveys of all the properties along the new viaduct’s route.

St Ermin’s Hotel reopens following £30 million refurbishment

The Grade II Listed hotel with evocative Art Nouveau styling and Rococo plasterwork has been entirely renovated, and the original courtyard garden restored and lushly replanted, together with the metalwork arch rebuilt between the gothic creatures guarding the entrance.

Aworth were commissioned by Terry Farrell & Partners to undertake a detailed measured building survey of the hotel, including the elevations, sections, floor plans, reflected ceiling plans and rectified photography to English Heritage specifications. 

Amerimar Enterprises specialise in hotel redevelopment and the £30 million refurbishment of the 330 room St. Ermin’s Hotel, London represents their first international endeavour outside of the U.S.

Croudace Homes flagship development

Sherfield Park is Croudace Homes flagship development in Hampshire, all designed from Aworth topographical survey data.

The development in Chineham with over 800 carefully considered dwellings creates a vibrant village life with attractive communal spaces, pleasant street layouts and an extensive grid of cycle ways and footpaths. The scheme is also very environmentally conscious with water retention facilities for each property, a series of balancing ponds and an underground recycling centre.

Aworth have been connected with the scheme since 1996 and we are proud to continue to work closely with Croudace Homes on their projects, from small housing developments to large masterplanning projects.

Aworth survey for London 2012 Olympics

The refurbishment works and major new access platform improvements at Stratford City Regional Station for the London 2012 Olympics are all based on recent Aworth survey data for Ove Arup & Partners. The station will be the key transport hub and the main gateway station to the Olympic Park.

Aworth were able to assist production company Outsider with surveys of buildings on film locations to enable scale models for studio film recording. The Stand Tall advertising campaign for Clarks Shoes combines centuries of shoe making expertise with classic and contemporary design for new styles designed to make you Stand Tall.

Aworth have been on hand throughout the development of this project,  assisting European Land  with Land Registry compliant surveying services, topographical surveys, setting out, as-built surveys and visualisation surveys. Merchant Square is superbly located within Paddington Basin where M&S and Orange have already located their headquarters.  Renowned architecture by Mossessian &  Partners and the proposed 42-storey skyscraper,  dubbed the Cucumber Tower by Robin Partington Architects are set to dominate the skyline.
