Aworth
Land Surveys is proud to celebrate 45 years of excellence.
From our founding in 1963 in a small office in Kingston,
Surrey, by John Aworth, Aworth Survey Consultants (as
we are now called) has grown into one of the UK's most
established and successful surveying companies.
We
are proud of what we have achieved in our 45 years,
undertaking projects with the application of some of
the most modern techniques and equipment, and would
like to share the story of our growth.
In
1963 our survey projects were typically all over the
UK for schemes such as motorway service stations and
new town housing developments. The field equipment used
was mainly optical (not electronic as it is today) and
required enormous skill and experience to be operated
effectively. Very few topographic surveying companies
existed, so our work was widespread and varied.
One
of our key personnel, Graham Russell joined the company
in 1965 and by 1966 our considerable success required
us to expand both our base and management. Larger offices
in Morden, Surrey, were established and a founding member
of staff, Gerry Purdy, became a Director.
With
bigger offices came the ability to expand our range
of services and so a reprographic subsidiary company
was established. Large format drawings that were drawn
by hand could now be reproduced true to scale using
a variety of photomechanical techniques providing a
range of presentation.
By
1975 Graham Russell was appointed a Director and John
Witherden had joined the company as a trainee surveyor.
Despite some very difficult times, which were to include
economic climate changes and the sudden death of our
founder John Aworth in 1976, the firm management of
Graham Russell and Gerry Purdy steered us through to
more successful years.
Projects
undertaken by the company during the 1980's and 90's
continued to be varied, with work in the Falkland Islands
and Italy. Meanwhile, John Witherden became a Director
In 1987 and Gerry Purdy retired in 1995 after 32 years
of service. With Gerry's retirement Graham Russell and
John Witherden managed the company. Our impact on the
industry was further recognized when Graham Russell
was elected President of the UK's Survey Association.
In 1999 John Witherden became Managing Director.
By
the beginning of the new millennium the advancement
of equipment technology was fast moving, with data loggers
and electronic survey instruments used to gather data
for processing on PC's. We undertook considerable investment
in these technologies, true to our continued effort
to remain at the forefront of the industry. It is through
45 years of such efforts that we have succeeded.
